Modeling Photography at Kansas University

Today I met with Mark and Stella at Balboa Park for some gorgeous engagement photos. I shoot a lot of beach photos but honestly Balboa Park is my favorite place to shoot. It's really a Photographer's dream for shooting portraits like these.

We were treated to a picture perfect day - temps in the upper 70's with just a slight breeze (perfect convertible weather I might add, ahem).

Ahhhhhhhhhh, twins! One of life's little miracles. There's just something magical about newborn twins. Of course photographing them is a whole other adventure...actually easier than photographing one newborn in some respects - when one baby is cranky, you can just photograph the other one....and because they are usually born prematurely, the babies are younger when Mommy & Daddy bring them in. So they are smaller, more moldable and much more sleepy than a 2 week old full-term baby.

I may actually post two blog preview from this session, since there are two babies....But enough chit chat, here is the first installment of previews from yesterday's newborn twins photo shoot:

Tonight I met with Barbara and Henry at Balboa Park to photograph them with their German Shorthair, Nittany. We had a perfectly overcast but bright afternoon - awesome lighting for outdoor portrait photography at Balboa Park fer sure!

It's all about timing....Meet Greg, Kathy and Jake from Washington DC. They flew out to San Diego for a brief vacation on February 4th, with a return flight scheduled for the 8th. Well, nothing like 20+ inches of snow to cancel that return flight.

Then another storm, and yet one more storm (I've lost track of how much snow there is in DC now) and now they are slated to go home on the 13th! So why not make lemonade out of lemons and take in a photo shoot at the beach while there is 30+ inches of snow waiting at home...?

Balboa Park Wedding Photography

This afternoon I met with CJ Anderson and Tricia Smith at Balboa Park for their elopement wedding. My kind of wedding - six people including the Officiant and Photographer (me of course). Quick ceremony and then ample time for some amazing wedding portraits around the park.

Weather was perfect - a moderate layer of clouds to even out the lighting, and slightly cool. I'm so happy with the photos that we got, I'm going to share more than the usual number of previews. Plus you just can't do Balboa Park justice with 3-4 pictures. ;)

Saturday morning I met with the Earl family at Balboa Park. Nothing beats a beautiful, calm morning at Balboa Park. We met at 8:30am and the park was nearly empty. It's so nice to be there in the morning before the crowds get there. Balboa Park is such a perfect backdrop for portrait photography.

Ocean Beach Pier - Long and Short Shutter Speeds

Early this morning I made the trek over to Ocean Beach Pier...No particular reason, no huge waves or anything. But I shot some pretty cool photos of the waves breaking on the rocks, and the pier. Just playing around I used the fastest and slowest shutter speeds that were possible. I also tossed in a graduated ND filter, because the sky was getting blown out on me without it.

Series 1 - fast shutter speeds....I wanted very sharp photos, so I went with Fstops of about F8 - F11. Kicked the ISO all the way up to 1000, and that gave me a shutter speed of about 1/1000 to freeze the flying water.

Here's a close in crop of the water in one of the photos:

Series 2 - tack on a pair of two stop ND filters and you can turn day into night....ISO all the way down to 50, Aperture all the way up to F22...Shutter speeds as slow as 2.5 seconds in direct sun!

And finally for fun a surfer was getting in the water right in front of me....why not?

Two Springer Spaniels Join the Family

Pamela's family has always had Springer Spaniels over the years. Recently both her Mom's family and Sister's family lost a long time family member (Springer Spaniels) and this weekend both adopted new family members!

Douglas (yes, named after Dug from the movie "Up") and Burton were born September 18th, so they are about 15 weeks old. What a couple of cuties!

Never to miss an opportunity, I grabbed the camera and fired off some quick photos of both of them. Many more where these came from, but here are a few early favorites...

Tonight I met with the Dall family at Coronado beach on what was one of the coldest and windiest afternoons that I can remember. Wind gusts around the county were measuring at nearly 50mph - certainly not ideal weather for outdoor portraits.

But, the Dall family was more than up to the task, and even got their feet wet (the next time I have a family complain about getting wet in July, I'm going to bring up the Dall family who did it on a cold day in December). Of course I myself was knee deep in salt water at times but hey, that's my job. ;)

Saturday evening I had the pleasure of photographing the Cooker family at Coronado Beach. We had an amazingly warm weekend here in San Diego, a beautiful sunset and the tide was way out - you couldn't ask for better conditions for beach photos.

To mix things up, the family brought white shirts and Chargers jerseys! Very cool, I loved the Chargers jerseys.

How to get a great Christmas tree photo

Since this article was so popular last year I am reposting for 2009.....

Here we have two beautiful christmas tree photos of our Son:

Now, here is how it is done....

First, you need to have the tree lit, and all of the other lights off in the room. Because light falls off over distance, and these lights aren't very bright, the light falls off pretty quickly. The further the tree is from the walls, the darker the walls are and the more the tree stands out from the background.

Because the room is so dark, you'll need to push your camera settings - high ISO (800 here), wide aperture (F1.4, 50mm lens) and slow shutter speed (1/20). With a slow shutter speed, you'll want your camera on a tripod for sure. In trying to maximize your light, you should also be wary of DOF. Here I focused on my Son and changed to M focus to make sure I didn't drift off of him.

This is really nothing more than a tripod mounted photo of a kid in a dark room, with one exception - the starburst on the lights. Photoshopped in? Nope.

When your aperture is set really narrow (F22 here) it creates a starburst on lights (I learned this trick shooting night time landscape photos). Try this - look at a light in your room and squint your eyes real narrow - same idea.

So the trick here is that I took two photos - a second one was taken at F22 with a six second shutter speed. I had my Son out of the picture for this shot (he'd be blurred all over the place at six seconds. So I had one photo of my Son in front of the tree with no starburst, and a second photo without him but with the starburst.

Then I layered the two photos and used a layer mask to combine them (see How To #10 here for a tutorial on using layer masks). By combining the images I get the best of both worlds.

Here is a trick to get this right...In this case I wanted to go from my widest aperture to my most narrow aperture. After I got the shot of Gavin, I switched from 1.4 to 22, but I counted the number of clicks that it took me to get there (16 I think). Then when I changed my shutter speed to compensate, all I had to do is turn it 16 clicks in the opposite direction and wa la, I have the same exposure. Only difference being the starburst and of course DOF.

The Three Brothers - Children's Beach Photos at the Hotel Del Coronado

Tonight I met with Chad, Bret and Wade.....and Suzee and Pam and Carolyn at the Hotel Del Coronado. A Grandma, her two Daughters, and three Grandsons, but the boys stole the show. Boys will be boys as they say and these three certainly held up their end of the deal.

We had a blast shooting some more formal shots at the hotel and then some uber-fun photos out at the beach and in the water.

Last night I met with the West family at Windandsea Beach in La Jolla for some family portraits. The tide was way in so we didn't have much of a beach to work with, but we made the best of it.

We had a nicely overcast but warm evening, and I noticed two or three other Photographer working the beach as well. Windandsea Beach is a very popular location with Photographers because of the beautiful La Jolla scenery, but it's less known to tourists.

Downtown Chicago Engagement Photography Part II - Outside Soldier Field

In part two of our downtown Chicago engagement photography series we have the happy couple outside of Soldier Field where we were not breaking any trespassing laws. ;)

We never thought we'd get in where we could see the field, so I was pretty happy with the locations that we found outside - beautiful architecture, gorgeous fall colors and of course a beautiful young couple. Downtown Chicago is such a beautiful place in the fall - perfect for engagement photos.

I flew back to Chicago this week to do some very brief work there and thanks to Facebook I reconnected with someone that I went to High School with. As it turns out her Daughter and Fiance were in need of some awesome engagement photos. Up to the challenge, and always excited to shoot in a new location, I jumped at the opportunity.

We shot all over downtown Chicago but the highlight of our session was getting inside of Soldier Field! How cool is that??

What a great, fun family to work with. Mr. & Mrs. Tostado had their wedding reception at the Hotel Del Coronado some 25 years ago! So these photos will surely provide some lasting memories.

Tonight I met with Dan, Toni and their dog Alex for a fun photo shoot at the Hotel Del Coronado and beach. Alex is a beautiful seven month old German Shepard. He's all puppy and we had a blast trying to get him to look at the camera, look at the sunset, stick out his tongue, etc.

First we marched right through the hotel lobby (like we owned the place - me in my bare feet, and with Alex in tow) to the inner courtyard:

Today I had the privlege of photographing Darren, Michel and their baby girl at their home in San Diego. We had a blast, Darren and Michel got a case of the giggles once or twice, and we wore out their Daughter to the point where she was completely passed out at the end of the photo shoot.

We shot photos both outside in their beautifully landscaped yard, and then a few inside the house as well. Here are a few quick favorites...

Saturday evening I met with the Guerrero family of 15 at the Hotel Del Coronado for some fun family beach photography. We shot individual photos of the kids, some small family photos and of course some big group photos. We had the perfect evening - warm, a beautiful sunset, and not even the slightest breeze. And the fact that Summer is over meant fewer people at the beach.

Every year at the bigging of football season I take my Son Gavin over to the football field at Grossmont College to take some fun football photos on the field. This year we took it a step further and bought a replica full sized Chargers football helmet, and some eye black.

Gavin and I were on the field just after 7am this morning and a nice fog was rolling in and out, keeping the harsh sun off of us. We got a ton of great photos, here are just a few of them.

Wednesday evening I had the pleasure of again meeting with the Gerlach family for some great family beach photos. The Gerlachs are return customers, we also did family beach photos for them in 2007. Lightning and abstract art from Phoenix Arizona

Every year I travel to Arizona in search of some awesome lightning photos. Some years are better than others, and to this point 2009 has been a bummer. I may get one more shot at it, but it's been very disappointing so far.

Last Thursday I got off some photos of a big storm coming into Phoenix from the Northeast. Unfortunately, before I knew it the storm was everywhere, and I was surrounded by lightning (not good when you'e standing in a field with a tripod). I didn't get anything worthwhile, but here are the two decent lightning photos that I did get.

Right after this the storm was over me and it was time to get back in the car:

I was getting rained on, and the wind was probably blowing at 40mph when I got this one:

So that's it for lighting. However, it's a long, dark drive back to Tucson so I decided to get a little funky with the camera. These are pretty much ROOTC, and are 20 second exposures. I thought they were pretty cool:

Saturday evening I met with the Anderson family up in Encinitas for some family beach photos. We had yet another nice and overcast sky, which was great because it was windy. The overcast sky allowed me to shoot in any direction, so it was easy to have the women turned into the wind so as to keep the hair out of their faces.

Today I had the pleasure of photographing little Spencer and his family. Just one week old, Spencer was born just one week ago today - and one day before his Dad arrived home from deployment.

Saturday I had the pleasure of photographing a great little intimate beach wedding at Coronado Beach, just South of the Hotel Del Coronado. Kyler and Cory are from Henderson Nevada and wanted a nice, small beach wedding here in San Diego. With a small group of their family and closest friends in attendance we were able to find a small space right along the water to have a nice simple wedding ceremony.

Professional maternity photography is something that we've been doing for a number of years. But while studio maternity photography is such a beautiful art, rarely do we get asked to shoot maternity photos at the beach. But once in awhile comes along a couple who not only wants their maternity photos done at the beach...they're also willing to get a little wet! Enter Michael and Danielle...

A perfectly overcast morning quickly broke into beautiful blue skies down at Crystal Pier in Pacific Beach. Not only did we have direct sun to contend with, but there was so much kelp washed up on the beach that there were actually earth movers and dump trucks taking it away.

Somehow we managed to dodge all of the distractions and still come away with some beautiful maternity photos. Here are a few quick favorites:

A Marriage Proposal at Coronado Beach

Romance was in the air tonight at Coronado Beach. I was contacted by Matt so that I could photograph him proposing to Erica during their visit to San Diego (they are from Pennsylvania). What better place to propose to the love of your life than at the beach? And what better way to remember the special occasion than with beautiful photographs...?

Erica was under the impression that we were "just" doing a photo shoot. So things started out pretty ho hum.

Then, through a variety of hand signals and jestures behind Erica's back, Matt is able to convey to me just where he wants to propose, with the beautiful Hotel Del Coronado in the background.

It's become a tradition. Every year on the Tuesday after Memorial Day, I get up before sunrise and drive down to Rosecrans Military Cemetery here in San Diego. Rosecrans is the home to over 96,000 members of our military. It's one of those very unique places that truly commands your attention and tugs at your very soul.

Normally a great place for photography, it's even better over Memorial Day weekend. That's because every year the Boy Scouts come out and place a US flag on each and every grave site. With the flags added the cemetery is simply breathtaking. I never get tired of photographing it.

This was the fourth year in a row that I've done this, so it gets increasingly difficult to find new angles and perspectives. But I think I did a pretty good job this year.

Last night I spent some time with Ashleigh shooting her high school senior photos at Coronado Beach near the Hotel Del Coronado. We had a beautiful evening down at the beach. There were several other Photographers shooting family portraits as well - a sign that Summer is approaching.

Just sharing more photos from our trip to Yosemite National Park last week. While Yosemite is one of the most beautiful, amazing places on Earth for scenic photography, my main goal was actually to get some great family photos of us.

I can't tell you how much time we spent trying to find some clothes that we all liked for our photos. Knowing that most of the background would be green, we wanted to go with a solid red/maroon that would really compliment the background well, and stand out from all of the green. Thankfully we finally found them. Gavin's shirt...not so plain, but that's the way that we wanted it.

During the first couple of days at Yosemite, we spent a lot of time walking around, and the whole time I was scoping locations, times, sun positioning for the family photos that would be shot later.

So without further adeu, here are some favorites from the first location. ALL of these were shot by Grandma, and all were using an off camera 580EX flash mounted on a tripod, fired by the trusty ST-E2 transmitter. These were shot about an hour before sunset. We are in the shade (lit by the flash) and the background is well lit by late afternoon sun:

Yosemite National Park Moonbow May 2009

Last week we took a vacation to Yosemite National Park. We timed our vacation around the elusive moonbow. A moonbow is a rainbow created by the light of the moon, instead of the sun. It only happens under perfect conditions - the moon must be full or nearly full, clear skies, and the position of the moon. It only happens 4-5 days a month, and only in April, May and June each year.

Many of them are invisible to the human eye, but some are visable. However, the eye does not process color at night, so the moonbow just looks like a grey arch in the mist of the waterfall. But take a long exposure photograph and there it is in full color! Very cool.

Here are a few favorites from this year's Yosemite moonbow photos.

This is a full arch moonbow at the base of Lower Yosemite Falls. This one was very much visable, and you could see it get brighter and brighter as the moon moved across the sky. Be prepared to get wet if you're after this shot, there is a lot of spray from the falls:

And this is the bigger moonbow that is at the bottom of Upper Yosemite Falls. Totally invisible to the human eye, you'd never know it was there. This was shot from the parking lot near Sentinel Bridge:

Sedona Arizona Scenic Photography - Red Rock Crossing Sunset

Part 2 of my time in Sedona this week. Wednesday evening I headed over to Red Rock Crossing to shoot the most photographed location in all of Sedona. Sunset is the best time to shoot this location because the sun glows off of the huge red rocks.

This week while in Arizona I spent some time hiking around Sedona. What a great week, I get to spend time in two of my favorite places in the world - Sedona, Arizona and Yosemite National Park, California. A scenic Photographer's dream!!

Wednesday afternoon I spent about three hours hiking the West Fork Trail in Oak Creek Canyon, just North of Sedona. While Fall is the best time of year for this hike because of the colors, it was nice to hike West Fork outside of high season - I practically had the place to myself.

Phoenix Arizona Newborn Photography

I normally don't do in-home newborn photos, but as you may know I have been traveling over to Arizona (Phoenix, Tucson, Sedona, Flagstaff etc.) every couple of months in order to pick up some extra work....all due to the economy.

This week I again visited the Kosier family in Phoenix for some newborn photography. Their Son was just five days old. He needed a few snack breaks in between photos like most newborns but he did just great.

Today I visited the Dewell family at their beautiful home for some newborn photos. The star of the show was not very happy being nekked so most of the good photos that we got of him were dressed. But check out the basket and cool hat!

Saturday we had two great photo shoots at the studio, both celebrating first birthdays. The first family brought along Ciara who was celebrating her first birthday. Mom brought some very cute red, white and pink dresses that worked great in the photos. Then it was time to bust out the birthday cake. Ciara was very lady like and actually only used one hand....but also used both feet!
